We recently performed a solar panel inspection in Barnegat, New Jersey, on a system that was running fine day-to-day. From the ground, everything looked normal. Up close, it was a different story. Finding #1: The roof mounts weren't staggered

This was our biggest structural concern. Finding #2: The system had stopped reporting

One or more Enphase microinverters wasn't producing, and the system wasn't reporting in at all. The culprit was an outdated 3G cell card that can no longer keep the equipment online. Until it's updated or connected to Wi-Fi, there's no way to monitor how the solar system is actually performing — so a dead panel can go unnoticed for months.

Finding #3: Flashing, extra mounts, and debris

A few smaller issues rounded out the report. More than 20 mounts were overhanging the shingle line, where flashing needs to sit properly to keep water moving down the roof. We also found extra mounts drilled outside the array that serve no purpose — every unnecessary roof penetration is one more potential leak point — plus some minor debris on the panels. None are emergencies on their own, but each is worth addressing.

Rated 7 / 10. Overall, we'd rate this solar installation a 7 out of 10. The first fix is getting it connected to the internet right away so the equipment can be monitored. Our other big concern is the mounts not being staggered — we'd recommend having that examined by a pro before it becomes a structural issue down the road.
